Second Annual Anti-Corruption Conference of BiH Judiciary

High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council of BiH, with the support of USAID's Justice Activity in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and in partnership with APIK organized on 13 December 2016 in Mostar the Second Annual Conference on the subject of strengthening the integrity of the judiciary and the fight against corruption. The conference was organized in the context of the International Anti-Corruption Day (December 9). Besides members of the HJPC, the HJPC Secretariat, and the chief disciplinary prosecutor, the Conference was attended by chief prosecutors, court presidents, judges, prosecutors, representatives of professional associations, lawyers, ministries of justice, the NGO sector, academia and the media.

USAID Mission Director in BiH Mr. Peter Duffy, addressed the participants, followed by president of the HJPC, Mr. Milan Tegeltija and director of APIK Mr. Hasim Šabotić.

During the first session of the Conference, which was dedicated to achievements to date, challenges and future steps pertaining to judicial integrity, panel members Goran Nezirović, judge of the Supreme Court of FBiH, Vildana Helić, Tuzla Cantonal Court judge and Branko Perić, Court of BiH judge discussed the challenges and potential solutions when it comes to the integrity of the judicial institutions and ethical behavior of judicial office holders and members of the Council. In the second part of the Conference, which discussed capacities of the judiciary to fight corruption, Mahmut Švraka, chief prosecutor of RS PO, Dalida Burzić, chief prosecutor of Sarajevo Cantonal PO, Tamara Laptoš, Head of USKOK, and investigative journalist Azhar Kalamujić talked about challenges and the capacity of judicial institutions to combat corruption, as well as the importance of improving cooperation between prosecutors’ offices and investigative journalists. During both sessions of the Conference, the panelists, with contribution from the audience, referred to the achievements to date, current challenges and future steps for the judiciary and its partners when it comes to fighting corruption. The objective of the Conference was to open discussion among members of the general judicial community and raise awareness about the state of BiH judiciary in the field of integrity and ethics, contribution of courts and PO’s to the fight against corruption and identification of modalities for improving these areas inside judiciary.
